Chapter 5

I don’t know what I had been expecting, but it wasn’t this. Agatha’s harsh exterior and frosted interior, her threats and lethal magic had me believing she would drive me to the gates of hell, not a doll’s house on the outskirts of town. It was a square like a house built from Lego with window box planters at every window, blooming bright with rainbow colors. A creeper twisted its way up the face of the building to reach the top story, some of it escaping the lattice to strangle the down-pipe with its green grip. Squeezed between boxed hedges and golf green perfect lawn was a neat row of miniature clumped shrubs speckled with white flowers.

I kept my pace beside her as she clopped along white pavings laid diamond shaped along the lawn. Before we reached the steps, Auntie Bea slipped out of the large entrance doors. Her eyes skimmed Agatha, then settled on me. Never had I seen her act so reserved as she demurely averted her gaze from me to her feet. A sudden injection of heat blanketed my heart and swelled up my throat into my head. Not even the tough sorts that gathered at Auntie Bea’s poker table could dim her bluster. But this ice berg beside me had her cowering.

“So this is the coven’s hideout,” I said to Auntie Bea once Agatha and I had climbed the steps.

Auntie Bea frowned and gave one shake of her head, while Agatha strode past toward the doors. Hand settled on the huge brass hanger, she turned her head to glare at Auntie Bea. “I want you in my office in an hour.” Threat delivered, she disappeared inside without another word.

“In you go, kiddo.”

“I’d rather stay out here with you. She’s one scary witch.”

“Just do as she says, Laz, and yall be all right.”

“I’m not convinced they’re not the enemy.”

“Don’t fight this, Laz.”

“Some paranormal asshole turned up at school threatening me and they knew about it, only they decided not to do anything about it until he’d already had a little fun.”

“Yar not hurt, are ya?” Her eyes darted over my body.

“Just my nerves.”

She looked down onto the lawn. I knew my Auntie Bea, knew the guilts that haunted her, knew what the emotion looked like on her face. “Was it meant to be a test? To scare me into joining them?”

“No, Laz. It wasn’t a test. Nor was there any intention to scare ya. Ya weren’t in any real danger. Sometimes Agatha makes decisions for the good of the coven rather than the good of the individual.”

“Is she the leader?”

“Our high priestess.”

“Then she’s a shit high priestess. Number one rule of any leader, always think of the welfare of your followers.”

She nodded. “I hear ya, kiddo. That fuck Kalito was a bag of shit, causing our coven a world of problems. And, well, now he ain’t.”

“I was bait.”

“Ya ain’t hurt, so don’t take it so hard. It was nothing personal. I argued against it, if that’s any help.
